A liquid facelift is a cosmetic procedure where injectable fillers and neurotoxins (muscle relaxers) are used to create a “lifting” effect of the face.
Read on to learn about some specific facial areas that are usually enhanced during this procedure as well as how long each type of injectable product lasts.
Address Volume Loss
The cheeks, under eye area, and lips are the three most common areas where volume loss occurs. If you have dark circles under your eyes, you’ll likely see this issue get worse as you age.
Once volume is lost under the eyes, the dark, semi-circular shadows underneath become more pronounced and noticeable. Fillers work great to fill in this “tear trough” area.
Youthful cheeks are full and positioned high on the face. As we age, fat is lost in the cheeks and the muscles under the cheeks start to sag. Your liquid facelift can add volume to the deep cheek area so that not only is the cheek full again, but also the boost in volume gives the appearance of being lifted.
As we age, our lips begin to lose fat, collagen, and elastin. This creates a thinner, less hydrated appearance. For many, small vertical lines around the mouth can also appear (called “vertical lipstick lines”).
Hyaluronic acid is the most typical formula used for these areas. Some products are ideal for filling in and softening vertical lip lines, while others provide soft, hydrated, flexible fullness. Once lip volume has been replaced during your liquid facelift, you’ll look like you did years ago. Hyaluronic fillers usually last between 6-9 months.
Boost Collagen and Strengthen Skin Structure
Some filler products are designed to stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen with a substance called calcium hydroxylapatite. Because collagen is lost as we age (and what we have breaks down), collagen building is a crucial part of any effective anti-aging treatment.
Once deep creases and wrinkles have been filled with this type of filler, it encourages collagen building in the skin. This allows your body to naturally fill in the wrinkle with new collagen as the formula is absorbed. This type of filler product lasts about 1 year.
Wrinkles are caused by a number of issues including genetics, lifestyle choices, sun exposure, and facial muscle movements.
Botulinum toxin is used to paralyze certain facial muscles that contribute to wrinkles around the eyes, (“crow’s feet”), forehead lines (“worry lines”), glabellar lines between the eyes (“elevens”), soften the jawline, or reduce “bunny lines” around the nose and mouth.
After years of making facial expressions, wrinkles start to appear in these facial areas. Muscle relaxer injections help to smooth away those wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that lie directly underneath the wrinkled area.
Future wrinkles can also be prevented from forming if you get injections in these areas and continue to keep up with maintenance every few months. These products last for anywhere from 3-6 months.
