Bellafill Boosts Collagen Production

Bellafill contains polymethyl methacrylate microspheres (PMMA), bovine collagen gel, and lidocaine. The PMMA microspheres are made of a synthetic resin that prompts the body to produce collagen in the treated areas.

Collagen is one of the “fountain of youth” substances in the skin, along with elastin, stem cells, hyaluronic acid, fibroblasts, and growth factors, to name just a few. Collagen is a protein connective tissue that helps bring volume, structure, and strength to the structure of the skin.

As we age, existing collagen breaks down faster than the body can make it. Unlike youthful skin that constantly renews its own collagen supplies, aging skin decreases its collagen production starting around age 21 and continues to drop drastically with age.

Bellafill contains bovine collagen gel, which provides instant plumping and volume to the areas where it is injected. Over the course of about the first year after injection, the body metabolizes and carries away the collagen gel.

By that point, the PMMA microspheres have already prompted the skin to produce more collagen in all of the treated areas. The newly produced collagen shows up as visibly improved volume and structural integrity in the skin.

Bellafill for Acne Scars

Bellafill is an excellent filler for treating two types of acne scars. When a blemish occurs, it can leave a depression in the skin after it heals. This is especially true with cystic acne, which occurs deep under the skin in the dermis layer.

An icepick scar looks like a small hole from the surface view of the skin. Underneath, it looks like a deep wedge has been taken out of the skin (as would occur with an icepick). A small amount of dermal filler in each scar can help reduce its appearance.

Bellafill is especially effective for boxcar scars, which often are wider and deeper than icepick scars. The filler can help reduce the deep-pitted appearance, while the PMMA microspheres prompt the body to fill in the area with its own collagen.

The goal with using Bellafill for acne scars is to lessen the depth of the scar so that the surface of the skin has a smoother, more even appearance.
