If you suffer from acne and the scars that result from it, you might wonder if there’s anything that can be done to get your skin looking smoother again?
Thankfully, there are many different types of laser devices that specifically target acne and scarring. Read on to learn more about each one.
Does laser treatment really get rid of acne scars permanently?
Lasers that address acne scars are designed to resurface the skin, not “erase” the scars entirely. For individuals with darker skin pigmentation, any type of acne (surface acne or cystic) can result in darkening of the skin in the area where the skin was damaged.
Laser treatments can reduce the appearance of these areas of dark pigmentation, allowing for a more even skin tone. Additionally, the texture of the skin is made smoother. If deep scars are present, Bellafill® is an injectable filler that can be used to fill in pitted scars.
However, please note that broken skin and inflammation from blemishes is the real cause of acne scarring. Therefore, laser treatments can reduce current acne scars, but cannot prevent them from reoccurring. What these treatments can do is improve the overall tone and texture of the skin, leading to more smiles when you look in the mirror.
To prevent scarring in the future, avoid scratching, picking, or popping acne blemishes because breaking the skin (by popping it) or squeezing the blemish (causing inflammation) will inevitably lead to hyperpigmentation (dark spots) and scars.
How can I get rid of long term pigmentation?
Laser skin treatments are designed to not only help reduce acne scars, but to also improve hyperpigmentation that can happen with age, sun exposure, and hormonal changes.
For those with acne, you can get rid of long term pigmentation by using a skin care regimen that fades dark spots. These products contain chemicals that lighten the skin, thus reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
As for acne prevention, choose a skin care line that promotes clean pores and fewer bacteria on the skin. Ask Dr. Chang about which products she recommends (we have them right in the office). She can also recommend specific facials and chemical peels (such as a Silk Peel) that help prevent new breakouts.
