How to Get the Look You Want with Lip Fillers

Lips fillers are a budget-friendly, non-surgical way to plump your pout (and results are instant). In this article, you’ll learn more about the anatomy of the lips and which areas can be enhanced to give you the exact customized look you’re going for.

Lip Anatomy 101

Just like the face has areas where certain features are located, so do the lips. Let’s look at some basic lip anatomy. The “cupid’s bow” is the double-curved area in the center of the top lip with the dip in the middle. This area gives the mouth character and definition. It gets its name from looking very similar to the bow used in archery.

The area just below that is called the upper vermillion. This area is what makes up the top lip itself.

The upper vermillion is often enhanced as one entire area, but some people prefer to enhance just the center to give the lip more projection.

The border of the upper lip can also be filled with injectables to help define the outer border of the lip. This helps provide an enhanced border or rim around the lips, and looks great with or without lipstick.

The oral commissure is the part of the lips that touch when the mouth is closed. These areas are popular choices for lip fillers because they can give the appearance of larger lips by creating more vertical depth.

The lower vermillion is the lower lip. Similar to the upper vermillion, the border, center, entire lip, and/or the commissure can be enhanced with fillers.

The area surrounding the mouth can also be enhanced with fillers by injecting vertical lipstick lines and creases with fillers (rather than adding overall volume).

How Big is Too Big?

Believe it or not, math is involved in the beauty of the lips. The general guideline for the ideal lip ratio of vertical height of the top lip to the bottom lip is 1 to 1.6.

Please note that these numbers are descriptors for Caucasian individuals; people of diverse ethnic backgrounds often have different beauty standards.

For a natural look, you can enhance your lips to the size you want, and if you ask your injector to keep these proportions the same, you’ll walk away being very happy with your results.

Although “duck lips” are a popular choice for some clients, Dr. Chang doesn’t appreciate the way they look and she won’t inject clients with that much filler. So, if you want duck lips, you’ll have to go somewhere other than Beatitude Aesthetic Medicine.

Patient Stories Dr. Chang has an eye for symmetry and aesthetics. I went in for a consultation to have fillers under my eyes. Instead I was educated on my facial anatomy. I agreed to some fillers in my forehead and cheeks instead and could not be more pleased with the outcome.
