It’s a big decision knowing when to get fillers, how much to inject, and which product is right for you.
Why Lip Fillers?
The majority of clients decide on lip fillers for one of these reasons:
- They’ve always had small lips & want to add volume, definition, and/or shape.
- The aging process has resulted in volume loss and/or sagging in the lips.
- They have vertical “lipstick lines” and wrinkles around the mouth.
Fillers are designed to be soft and flexible when injected into the lips. This allows the product to feel like your real lips. It moves with your natural lips, feels soft and supple, and should be injected with overall facial balance in mind.
Facial balance is very important because some injectors can overdo it, making the client look overdone and unnatural. Sometimes clients ask Dr. Chang for this because they like that overly pouty look.
Dr. Chang will not over inject lips, even if a client asks for it. Her artistic eye is drawn to creating an appealing and natural enhancement that will create symmetry and balance when taking all facial features into account.
Types of Filler Substances Used
The most popular choice for fillers is hyaluronic acid, or HA. This is a naturally occurring sugar/carbohydrate found in your skin. Its purpose is to draw moisture into the skin, helping it look youthful and supple.
With age, HA levels decrease dramatically, resulting in a deflated, dehydrated look. Another by-product of the aging process is loss of collagen. When this happens in the lip area, it can contribute to further loss of volume and structure (sagging can occur).
Because collagen loss is a major issue for some of our clients, Dr. Chang likes the HA-based fillers because they prompt the body to create collagen in the injected areas. .
