BOTOX® Cosmetic is an effective neurotoxin muscle relaxer that temporarily paralyzes facial muscles so that wrinkles are less noticeable. The solution contains botulinum toxin A (onabotulinumtoxinA) in a purified form, which is safe for injecting into facial muscles for anti-aging purposes.
Dr. Aeria Chang is an Allergan Platinum Injector of BOTOX® Cosmetic, which means that she is in the top 5% of doctors who do injections in this country. With that kind of expertise and experience, she is one of the most sought after aesthetic doctors in San Diego and beyond.
Read on to learn more about how many units of BOTOX® Cosmetic are usually needed in each facial area as well as the number of injections you can expect to receive during treatment.
All of the information in this article is an estimate; Dr. Chang may decide that you need either less or more of the units stated below.
Number of BOTOX Units by Facial Area
One of the most frequent questions I get asked is, “How many units of BOTOX do I need?” Here is an estimate. BOTOX injections are usually charged by the unit. Prices average anywhere from $9.50 to $12 per unit, so this should give you a rough idea of your costs based on the facial area(s) you want treated.
Forehead lines: The forehead is one of the largest facial areas for BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment. Thus, about 15-30 units are usually needed to adequately paralyze these muscles.
Eyebrows: The eyebrows are one of the first facial areas that show the signs of aging. This area can be tricky in terms of units needed, as each person’s wrinkle severity will be different, therefore, more units will be needed for some individuals. As a general rule, anywhere from 2-5 units are needed in each eyebrow area (above the eyebrows).
Frown lines: In the glabellar muscles, or the muscles that cause “elevens” in between the eyebrows, about 18-24 units are usually sufficient, but some individuals need up to 40 units to achieve optimal results.
Crow’s feet: This outer eye area is one of the most common places where people get injections. Anywhere from 5-15 units per side are generally required.
Nasolabial area: Also called “bunny lines,” this vertical area between the mouth and nose can be treated with about 5-10 units on each side.
How Many Injections Will I Need?
You may need a different number of injections than stated below, but here is the general guideline for the three major facial areas where BOTOX is injected.
- Crow’s feet around the eyes: Based on eye muscle anatomy, the average person will need 3 injections into the muscle groups in the crow’s feet area. These muscle groups are located on the outer eye perimeter near the temples.
- Frown lines around the eyebrows: Generally, 5 injections are given to the muscles groups in this area. These muscles are located between the eyebrows (also commonly referred to as “elevens”). They are responsible for those pesky vertical lines that appear when the eyebrows are furrowed together. In some cases, dermal fillers may also be used to fill in the skin (if a permanent crease has formed).
- Forehead lines: On average, 5 injections are needed to address the muscle groups in the forehead. These are the horizontal lines that form when you raise your eyebrows. In some cases, dermal fillers may be needed to smooth away permanent creases in this area.
