Bellafill is best known for its ability to instantly fill in deep creases around the mouth (such as nasolabial folds) and acne scars on the face. One of the most appealing aspects of this filler is that it lasts for up to five years.
Read on to learn more about how this filler product is able to last as long as it does.
It’s All About the PMMA
Bellafill contains an FDA-approved resin substance calls polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA. This resin has been safely used in implantable medical devices for many years and is safe for injectable use.
In Bellafill, the PMMA resin is in microsphere form. This filler contains tiny microscopic PMMA spheres that are measured in “microns” rather than millimeters or inches.
The PMMA microspheres are so tiny that they are able to easily fit through the end of a needle so that can be injected precisely into facial areas where anti-aging or scar filling are desired.
Once injected into the skin, the microspheres prompt the body to recognize it as a foreign object. The body responds by producing collagen in the treated areas to surround the PMMA microspheres.
What’s the big deal about PMMA prompting the body to create collagen in the treated areas? First, the aging process causes a dramatic slowing of collagen production, which is why older skin looks thinner and has more wrinkles than younger skin.
Also, more collagen production means that the skin is stronger. Collagen provides a supportive scaffolding to help the skin stay thicker and less prone to wrinkles and creases. Once collagen has been built up in the treated areas, they now have more underlying structure and volume.
Acne scars and pitting can be greatly reduced through Bellafill injections because the scars now have more collagen in them, which provides more volume and fills them in.
Wrinkles appear less dramatic because Bellafill allows the crease to be filled in with newly formed collagen. This fills in the wrinkle and adds volume to a previously “empty” crevice where the crease was.
Because the PMMA microspheres are not carried away or metabolized by the body, they remain in the areas where they have been injected. Over the course of about five years, the body continues to react to the PMMA microspheres by producing more collagen in the treated areas.
Once the five years are up, additional Bellafill injections are recommended to maintain desired results (if needed). I often advise patients to consider also using muscle relaxer injections in strategic areas where wrinkles and creases are most likely to develop with age. This helps stop some wrinkles and creases from forming in the first place.
