One of the best ways to get fuller lips instantly, with no downtime, and no surgery is with lip injections. Lip filler formulas offer a soft, natural look and feel because they are made from a flexible gel.
Read on to learn more about what lip fillers are made from and how long they last.
What Are Lip Fillers Made Of?
Most lip fillers are made from a substance called hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a sugar that has a hydrating effect in the body. HA is actually a molecule that is naturally found in our bodies, specifically in the deep layers of the skin.
Within our skin, HA serves the purpose of drawing water to it (like a hydration magnet!) and keeping it there to provide nourishing H20 to your body’s cells and tissues. When injected into the lips, HA serves a similar purpose: it draws water to it and keeps it there, providing soft, natural volume to the areas where it’s been injected into.
Another wonderful benefit of HA fillers is that they boost collagen production in the treated areas. Collagen is a soft connective tissue that provides strength and suppleness in the skin. As we age, collagen levels not only decrease, but our rate of collagen production slows down. Lip fillers can provide higher collagen levels, which results in a more youthful appearance.
How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?
When injected into the lips and around them (vertical lipstick lines, for example), HA fillers can replace lost volume due to the aging process. For younger clients, fillers can add volume to naturally thin lips.
Some formulas contain just HA in a water-based gel, while others also contain lidocaine to help numb the area while it is being injected. At your doctor’s office, ask about topical numbing gel prior to your treatment if you want to lessen discomfort from the needle. Most clients opt to have some type of topical numbing, ice, or filler formula that contains lidocaine.
For vertical lipstick lines on the upper lip, Belotero®, Restylane Silk®, and Volbella® are top contenders. They are specifically formulated to gently and effectively “melt in” to lipstick lines to fade them away.
Juvederm Ultra® is wonderful (and Dr. Chang’s preferred filler) because it is ideal for increasing lip volume to just about any degree. Whether you want to add a little “oomph” to your pout or turn your lips into a main facial feature, Juvederm Ultra® is your product!
These lip fillers have the following “life span” before they need to be retouched:
- VOLBELLA®: 12-18 Months
- Juvederm Ultra®: About 4-6 Months
- Restylane Silk®: About 6 Months
- Belotero®: About 6 Months
