Photodynamic Therapy for Acne (PDT)
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a medical treatment that uses a photosensitizing drug in combination with a light source to activate the drug. This results in an activated oxygen molecule that can destroy nearby cells. Photodynamic therapy is an effective solution for treating precancerous cells and certain types of other cancer cells.
Photodynamic Therapy was originally designed and is still used for superficial cancer treatment. However, recent advancement in the field of skin care and acne treatment has led to an expansion in the use of PDT.
Photodynamic Therapy involved three essential steps:
- application of photosensitizer drug
- incubation period
- light activation
Photodynamic Therapy is an effective solution for clear skin and acne treatment. Patients are advised to avoid sun for 36 hours after the treatment. Patients might experience moderate exfoliation, pink skin, and skin tightness for about 2-3 days.
